Mohawk College joined the SBI in late 2017 as a Gold reporting member. Mohawk is currently completing a greenhouse gas inventory for 2018-2019. The inventory will inform its new Environmental Management Plan which will identify key strategies for further emissions mitigation and opportunities for new programs and services that support campus sustainability. The GRI framework is helping the College expand its understanding of Mohawk’s impacts from an environmental, social, and economic perspective.
In 2019, Mohawk College continued to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and climate change leadership. The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation, became the first building in Canada to achieve the Zero Carbon certification for both Design and Performance from Canada’s Green Building Council (CaGBC).
In 2019, The College was awarded CaGBC’s Inspired Educator Award and became the first Ontario College to receive a STARS gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Mohawk was also named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the 6th consecutive year.

In 2018, Mohawk conducted a campus greenhouse gas inventory that will be used to help create a baseline and target for the SBI program. By utilizing the GRI framework and reporting structure, we hope to expand our understanding of Mohawk’s impacts from an environmental, social, and economic perspective.
This past year, Mohawk College continued to demonstrate commitment to sustainability and climate change leadership amongst Ontario colleges and the community. In fall 2018, Mohawk College finally opened the doors to The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation, Canada’s largest and Hamilton’s first zero carbon institutional building. The Joyce Centre incorporates leading-edge energy harvesting and conservation technologies that brings learning and applied research together in a living lab. To support the building, Mohawk College also launched their Zero Carbon Ambassadors Program – a network of peer educators responsible for engaging others in creating a net zero Joyce Centre. In addition, Mohawk College installed Ontario’s largest solar carport and installed 8 electric vehicle charging stations across the College.
Mohawk College won 8 awards for sustainability leadership in 2018 including: Environmental Sustainability Award from Alectra Utilities, Engineering Project of the Year from the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, Smart Commute’s Platinum Designation, 3rd among Canadian colleges for AASHE’s Sustainable Campus Index, and the Environmental Award of Excellence from EECOM. For the 6th year in a row, Mohawk College was also named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2018.
